Multi-Candle Reading: When Several Flames Speak Together

6 min read

Illustration · Three matching tapers in different colors, each standing for a different person, option or part of a situation.

Layouts of two, three or more candles, and how to compare their flames fairly.

Multi-candle readings use two or more candles together. Each one stands for a person, an option, or a part of a situation. A common layout is three candles for past, present and future, or for you, the other person and the relationship. Another compares two candles for two paths to see which "burns" more strongly.

How to compare

  • Burn candles of the same type, size and brand so differences mean something.
  • Watch which flame is tallest, steadiest or burns down first.
  • See whether flames lean toward each other (connection) or away (distance).
  • Note whether the drips of different candles run together or stay separate.

Color choices

Colors are usually chosen to match each candle's role. Green might stand for growth, white for clarity, gold for success. See for traditional associations.

Fairness and ethics

Representing another person is common. Readings should stay reflective, though, not attempts to control them. LumenOracle won't help with workings meant to bind or harm someone, and will suggest boundary-setting or self-focused alternatives instead.

Complete reading, start to end

Follow all three stages in order. The middle stage is specific to this type of reading.

Stage 1 · Before you light

  1. 01Choose a quiet time when you can stay with the candle for the whole burn.
  2. 02Clear a stable, heat-proof surface away from curtains, shelves, pets, children and drafts.
  3. 03Gather what you need: candle, holder or dish, lighter, snuffer, water nearby, and a notebook or phone.
  4. 04Trim the wick to about 5 mm and wipe away dust or loose wax.
  5. 05If you dress the candle, use only skin-safe, diluted oils and a light touch of dried herbs.
  6. 06Ground yourself with a few slow breaths and notice how you feel right now.
  7. 07Write your intention or question in one clear sentence.

Stage 2 · During the reading

  1. 08Choose identical candles and assign each a clear meaning.
  2. 09Arrange them at least 8 cm (3 inches) apart on one heat-proof tray.
  3. 10Light them in a set order and note the time.
  4. 11Compare flames and drips at intervals.
  5. 12Extinguish all together and record which candle showed what.

Stage 3 · Closing and reflecting

  1. 13Extinguish the flame with a snuffer or by dipping the wick, not by blowing, if your tradition prefers.
  2. 14Let the candle and any wax cool completely before touching or moving it.
  3. 15Photograph what remains from the same angle you used during the burn.
  4. 16Write down what you saw, the physical conditions (drafts, candle type, wick length) and the time.
  5. 17Note one symbolic meaning and one physical explanation for each main sign.
  6. 18Record how you feel now compared with before, and one small next step you choose.
  7. 19Dispose of wax and remains respectfully and safely, following your tradition if it has a custom.
  8. 20Revisit your notes in a few days or weeks to see what still feels true.

Do

  • Use matching candles so physical differences don't skew the reading.
  • Space candles apart so their heat doesn't melt each other.
  • Write down which candle means what before lighting.
  • Keep the layout on one large heat-proof tray.

Don't

  • Don't cluster candles tightly; heat combines and wax can flare.
  • Don't compare a cheap candle with a premium one and read it as fate.
  • Don't use readings to try to control or harm another person.
  • Don't leave a multi-candle layout burning unattended.
