What Om (ॐ / AUM) means in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, how to chant A-U-M, and how it links to the Third Eye and Crown chakras.
Meaning
Om (ॐ), also written AUM, is considered a sacred sound in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist traditions. The Mandukya Upanishad describes its parts — A, U, M and the silence after — as states of waking, dreaming, deep sleep and the state beyond.
How to chant
- Breathe in gently.
- A ("aah") — mouth open.
- U ("ooh") — lips round.
- M ("mmm") — lips closed, a long hum.
- Rest in the silence before the next breath.
Try 3, 9 or 21 rounds. The hum is often felt in the face and head, which is why Om is linked with the Third Eye, and the silence after with the Crown.
With a candle
Gaze softly at a steady flame between rounds; close your eyes during the silence and notice the after-image fade.
